Secret Ingredient

September 6, 2011

Tiziana and I are pretty obsessed with the TV show Chopped. Here’s a comic I drew about it, while I should’ve been working on something else. Click to enlarge.

The Sinister Six

May 19, 2011

In anticipation of Fanaticon, I’ve drawn Spider-Man, and The Sinister Six. If you enjoy this piece, you can pick up an 11″ by 17″ print at Fanaticon, this Saturday. Click the image to enlarge.

Incoming… Fanaticon 2011

May 16, 2011

Around this time last year, we were frantically writing, drawing, printing, folding and stapling in preparation for our first comic convention appearance, at Fanaticon, in our beautiful hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. For us, and for almost everyone we spoke with, last year’s inaugural Fanaticon was a rousing success. It was a very heartening experience, to decide to make comics and art prints, commit to exhibiting them at a brand new convention, with no guarantee of attention or attendance, and to have it go unimaginably well. It was great. It made us brave. It made us turn our mini-comic into a weekly webcomic. But, most importantly, it made us believe in ourselves, as creators. And we can’t wait to do it again, for a second year.

We’ll be at the same table (Table 48), immediately visible as soon as you enter Artist’s Alley, on the second level. We’ll be selling a wide variety of comics and art. There will be two volumes of our ongoing comic, Hair and Therapy. There will be our screen printed Comic Book Zodiac poster series, which you might remember from last year. There will also be t-shirts for sale. They’ll look a little something like this (but without the words). And we will have a brand new art print, based on a classic superhero/villain story, that we will debut at the convention. I’d tell you more, but it’s a surprise!

So, if you’re in the Asheville area, come to the show, and say hi! We promise a good time, even if you’re not a huge comics fan. There’s going to be live music (such as our friends The Mad Tea Party), tons of people running around in elaborate costumes, and comics, comics, comics!

While you’re at Fanaticon, we’d like to recommend a few stops along your route. Comic Envy, our favorite comic shop in the world, will be right by the front door this year, so make sure to stop by, and tell Darrin we said hello.  Our friends Henry Eudy, Tom Davidson and Eraklis Petmezas are driving up from Charlotte, on our recommendation (at least partially), and they’re all great cartoonists and excellent guys, so buy some of their comics, and help make it worth their while.

We hope to see you there. Cheers!

Spidey sketch

March 31, 2011

Felt like doing a Spider-Man sketch, so I made a Spider-Man sketch. Enjoy.

Urban Cowboy

February 1, 2011

Yay, visual puns and observational humor!

Maybe I’ll do more one-off comics like this. Or maybe I’ll get embarrassed, and crawl back under my rock. The choice is yours, Internet.

And if you’d like to read a comic that is drawn better than this, and written way better than this, go here.

Fanaticon 2011

January 14, 2011

Our hometown comics convention is getting ready for its second year, and we’re really excited to be a part of it once again! Fanaticon was a phenomenal experience last year, and we couldn’t be happier that it was successful enough to warrant a second year.

For those of you who are visiting us from our link on the Fanaticon site, here’s a little bit about what we do. First and foremost, we publish a webcomic called Hair and Therapy. The comic updates weekly, on Mondays, and we’re currently wrapping up the Second Chapter of the story, with Chapter Three beginning in the coming weeks. The printed version of Chapter One, called Mickey’s First Day, was debuted at last year’s Fanaticon. We’ll have both chapters available this year.

Secondly, we also make hand screenprinted posters out of our original illustrations. Last year, we debuted our Comic Book Zodiac series at Fanaticon. We’re currently working on designs for this year’s offerings, and we’ll be posting the designs on this blog as they are finished.

So, that’s us. If you find yourself in the Asheville area on May21st, come out to the convention! It was an absolute hoot last year, and I expect this year will be no different.

We’re also really excited to see a bunch of our awesome comics friends on the list. Our buddies Tom Davidson and Henry Eudy (our neighbors at last year’s HerorsCon) are on the list, as are a bunch of other awesome folks. So come check it out, people.

Hair and Therapy

June 19, 2010

So, as some of you might know, we’ve been working on turning our mini-comic, Mickey’s First Day, into a webcomic.

Well, now you can check it out. It’s called Hair and Therapy, and it’s about to begin. Starting today, we’ll be uploading Mickey’s First Day in it’s entirety to the site, one page at a time. Which means that 22 days from today, the second chapter in the story will begin! We’re planning on posting new pages at least once a week.

Please excuse the temporary bare bones look of the site. We’ll make it much shinier as the weeks progress. But for now, we’re focusing our energies on getting the comic online. So please, go check it out, and let us know what you think!

Thanks, Brent and Tiziana

HeroesCon Wrap Up

June 8, 2010

So, here we are, back in Asheville, after a whirlwind weekend in beautiful/humid Charlotte, where we exhibited our posters and comics at HeroesCon. We’ve spent the day getting back into the flow of our daily lives, and trying to fully digest our experiences from our first big-time comics convention.

Ultimately, we left Charlotte feeling both humble and inspired. We’re a small, young operation, and while we knew that we would be facing an uphill battle breaking even on the cost of attending, we thought it was going to be worth the effort to attend. And I think we were right. Our posters and comics seemed to have gone over pretty well. But more than anything, we got the chance to meet some really amazing and talented people.

We shared our assigned area of the convention with some really great guys. Rich Barrett (Nathan Sorry), Tom Davidson (Circle City Tales), and Henry Eudy (Oh the Humanatee) made the time fly by with great conversation, comics, and peanut butter Moon Pies. Seriously, peanut butter Moon Pies. I had no idea such a delicious thing even existed!

We got to catch up with some of the fine people we’ve known and loved for a while now, like Danielle Corsetto (Girls With Slingshots) and Evan Dahm (Order of Tales, Rice Boy). We also met Erika Moen (Dar), who couldn’t have been sweeter, and made friends with some other up-and-comers like ourselves, particularly Richard Cox, Melvin Eudy, and Banky, who were so sweet to us on our first night there, and let us pal around with them for the better part of the weekend.

Probably the most unexpected, and sweetest friend we made this weekend was Jim Scancarelli (Gasoline Alley). For some reason, he really took a liking to us, and kind of put us under his wing, introducing us to people, getting us into parties, and giving us great old movie recommendations and stories.  He’s probably one of the kindest people that we’ve ever met, and I really wish that he had a computer, so I could bug him constantly about learning how to draw better, without having to drive to Charlotte to do so.

So there you have it, folks. We went, we saw, we were awed by HeroesCon. We’ll definitely be going again. Although we might stay at a cheaper hotel next time.

Check back again later over the next couple of weeks. We’re preparing to launch our Etsy store (where you’ll be able to buy our Comic Book Zodiac prints), and the site for our new webcomic. We’ll have details and links, as soon as they are finalized. Bye!

HeroesCon GO!

June 1, 2010

Behold, our giant stacks of comics!

And with these, we are officially ready for HeroesCon. If you’re coming to the convention, you can find us at Table 441, in Artist’s Alley.

We printed 75 updated versions of the comic. The mark on the back is not the only thing that has changed since the first version. After discussing the comic with some of our comics friends, we corrected some of our rookie mistakes, particularly in the area of lettering techniques. The end result is, we think, a much nicer book to look at.

So, once again, thanks for your support, and we hope to see you at HeroesCon! It’s going to be amazing. We can’t wait.

HeroesCon, and More

May 28, 2010

We’re only one week away from our first time participating in HeroesCon. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this convention, it’s a three-day show (Friday, June 4th through Sunday, June 6th) that’s held at the Charlotte Convention Center, in lovely downtown Charlotte, NC. It features an excellent mix of mainstream and independent comics, and it’s a great way to meet some of the people behind the comics you love. I mean, just look at the guest list. Amazing.

Two years ago, we made the drive down to Charlotte on the Sunday of the convention, and we had an incredible time. It was there, while we were wandering around, buying way too many books from loads of awesome creators, that we decided that we wanted to be a part of all of this, and to someday write a book, and buy a table at this convention. So for us, next weekend is going to be really special, no matter how many posters and comics we sell.

To prepare, we’ve printed an second run of our comic, Mickey’s First Day (with some layout improvements), and we’ve reprinted some of the Comic Book Zodiac posters that we’re running low on. We’ve printed a 35-piece second edition of the Libra (Wonder Woman), Gemini (Hulk), Cancer (Batman).

Once we’re done with the second edition Zodiac prints, that’s it, guys. We’ll be printing no more of the Zodiac posters after that. So, if you want one of these posters, but you haven’t bought it yet, now would be a good time. Contact us at deaverparkpress (at) gmail.com for more information.

And now, for our next project. In July, we’ll be debuting our webcomic. It’s a continuation of Mickey’s First Day, centering on the day-to-day lives of these characters. I’d give you more details, but there’s currently nothing on the website we just purchased for the comic. We’ll unveil the name of the comic, and the URL, in the next few weeks, so please check back soon. Thanks!
