LAAFF flyers

August 22, 2011

In a town that is filled to the brim with festivals, the Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival is, in my opinion, the festival that has the most in common with the host city of Asheville. There’s lots of reasons. Everything, from the music to the food, is made and sold by locals. A large portion of the attendees show up in costume, and a lot of the costumes are amazing. And there are insane events, usually involving bicycles. So much fun, you guys.

I’m involved this year in two ways. I had the honor of providing an illustration for one of the three posters for this year’s event, which you can see above. My band, Albatross Party, will also be playing a set on Sunday afternoon at 5:30. So come by, rock out, and say hi!

2010 in review

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

A Boeing 747-400 passenger jet can hold 416 passengers. This blog was viewed about 2,100 times in 2010. That’s about 5 full 747s.

In 2010, there were 33 new posts, not bad for the first year! There were 75 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 20mb. That’s about 1 pictures per week.

The busiest day of the year was June 28th with 193 views. The most popular post that day was Comic Book Zodiac.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were facebook.com, aquamanshrine.com, tumblr.com, twitter.com, and hairandtherapy.com.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for deaver park press, deaverparkpress.com, deaverparkpress, zodiac “name required”, and www.deaverparkpress.com.

Posters!

September 14, 2010

Here are our three latest poster prints. I apologize in advance for the shoddy quality of the photos. I’ll be setting up a well-lit place in the house for these kind of photographs in the very near future.

The Brewgrass Festival is a yearly beer extravaganza here in Asheville, and through my wonderful day job, I’ve had the privilege of designing the t-shirts for the festival for the past four years (you can see all of my designs here). This year, for the first time, the organizers wanted to have commemorative screenprinted posters, and since Image 420 doesn’t officially offer poster printing, Tiziana and I gladly stepped in.

This is a tour poster for a local musical duo called Panina Holt & The Penny Roller. I can’t seem to find them on the web, so I can’t point you to their music. The art was provided by the band, we just handled the typesetting and printing.

And lastly, here is our latest Albatross Party show poster.

Two quick reminders before I go. First, we’re doing monthly specials on our Comic Book Zodiac posters over at our Etsy store. This month, our Virgo posters are on sale for $15, plus shipping and handling. And we’re getting ready to roll out a couple of new t-shirt designs, as well. Secondly, our webcomic Hair and Therapy is 18 pages into it’s second chapter. So, if you haven’t already checked it out, please do so. New readers make us very, very happy!

July Update

July 9, 2010

Man, it’s been a long time since we’ve posted anything on this site! So much has been happening over the last month. Our webcomic has kind of taken over our lives as of late. We just finished posting the first chapter, which some of you might remember as our mini-comic, Mickey’s First Day. We’re currently hard at work, writing and drawing the second chapter. The first page from this new storyline goes up on the site on Monday, so be sure to check it out.

The other project that has been eating up all of our time lately is the new Albatross Party album. We’re currently 3/4 of the way done with the recording process, so it won’t be long at all until this new record is out. We’re really proud of it. It’s kind of a departure from the sound of the first record, with lots and lots of big instrumental parts and lush vocal arrangements.

So, in lieu of any new prints that we’ve made (as in none, unfortunately), I wanted to show you a flyer design I just completed. I would’ve loved to screenprint this poster, but our current schedule wouldn’t allow it. Still, I think it came out pretty well. So check it out, and if you don’t have any plans on July 19th, come check out the show, as well.

Well hello, Aquaman fans!

June 28, 2010

So, we’d like to take a moment, and say thanks to The Aquaman Shrine, for posting links to our Aquaman/Black Manta and Mera posters. Your site was actually of great use to us while we were designing the posters. We spent a lot of time looking at your collection of Aquaman art, and ended up coming back again and again for reference. So thanks, and thanks for the traffic.

And if any of you are interested in having a hand screen printed, limited edition print of this art, please check out our Etsy store. We have 15 of each of these posters left, and we will happily ship our prints to wherever you might live. And, as an added incentive, we’ve marked the price of these two prints down to $15 each.

It’s alive! You can now buy our Comic Book Zodiac hand screen printed posters online!

Here is a link to our brand new Etsy store. Yay, commerce!

And We’re Back

June 6, 2010

We just got back to Deaver Park. What’s the opposite of “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed?” Us, that’s what. We’ll have a full report on our massive HeroesCon weekend later. But now, it’s time to rest.

More Fanaticon Pics

May 16, 2010

Here are a few more pictures of us from Fanaticon, courtesy of Asheville’s undisputed Queen of the ukelele, Ami Worthen.

Thanks, Ami! Everyone reading this should definitely check out her band, Mad Tea Party. They put on one of the most entertaining live shows around, and their albums are top notch, as well.

We’ve spent our Sunday recuperating from yesterday’s activites, but we did accomplish one thing that was not related to watching movies or bumming around on the internet. We booked our hotel in Chalotte, and in doing so, finalized our plans for HeroesCon. We’ll be appearing in the “Small Press” section of the convention. As soon as we find out exactly where you’ll be able to find us(i.e. our assigned table number), we’ll let you know.

Fanaticon 2010

May 16, 2010

So, I think it’s safe to say that that inagural Fanaticon festival was a success! We had an absolutely fantastic time. We got the chance to hang out with some of our local favorite creators, like Hope Larson, Evan Dahm, and Raven Perez, and we met a ton of fantastic people. Here’s hoping that Fanaticon becomes a yearly tradition in our little town.

Here are some pictures we took over the course of the day.

Here we are at our little table, with Tiziana looking radiant, as usual, and me looking, well, perplexed.

We got some shots of some of the fantastic cosplayers in attendance with their matching Zodiac posters. Here are a few.

There were so many people in costume at this convention, it was astounding. We got a lot of cool shots, but there was one picture that reigned supreme…

I freaking love the expression on Kid Mario’s face.

No now, with Fanaticon behind us, we begin preparations for HeroesCon, June 4-6, in Charlotte. Thank you, Asheville, for all of the support you gave to us today. We love you!

Fanaticon GO!

May 15, 2010

We’re finally done. It’s all finished. All twelve Comic Book Zodiac posters have been printed, and our mini-comic, MIckey’s First Day, is finished. Need proof? Here’s a crappy photo I shot in a low-light situation to prove it!

I have to say that finishing this little 22-page comic was one of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever had. As much fun as the Zodiac was, it’s this little comic that we’ve made that I’m most proud of at the moment. I hope that all of you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.

So, tomorrow is Fanaticon, and we’ll be there, on the second level, waiting with our little comic, and our not so little posters. We hope to see you there!
